    confirm / acknowledge

    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough to tel me whether there is a difference between the English verbs “confirm” and “acknowledge”?

    1.We confirm our telegram dated the 8 January.
    2.We confirm our telephone conversation.
    3.We confirm your price and terms of payment.
    4.We confirm your figures.
    5.We acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 2th January.

    The meaning and uses of both the words are different
    Though ‘confirm’ is used in different contexts, its basic meaning is: To make sure some thing is right by checking it again
    Examples: The witnesses confirmed the victim's account.
    His statement confirmed my doubts.
    Other uses: Express recognition of the presence or existence of
    She acknowledged his complement with a smile
    Administer the rite of confirmation to
    The temporary employees were confirmed in service after their probation.
    Support a person for a position or to make some thing legal
    The Senate confirmed the President's candidate for Secretary of Defense
    Acknowledge: the basic meaning is: to respond, to admit
    Examples: We must acknowledge the kindness she showed towards us.
    She acknowledged that she might have forgotten.
