The Opposition Leader's economic credibility relies on everything going pear-shaped.

MALCOLM Turnbull's decision to oppose the Federal Government's $42 billion policy to stave off recession and save jobs was, he tells us, formulated because the stimulus package is irresponsibly unaffordable and poorly targeted.

It is ironic, then, that the significant political risk he has taken is surely predicated on a belief that $42 billion will not be enough to insulate Australia from recession or keep a lid on unemployment.

When you roll the dice you take your chances.

Something that has gone pear-shaped has gone wrong. Apples have a regular shape; pears are an irregular shape. The use of the term in this piece suggests that he hopes things will not go as planned by the Federal Government.

'Rolls the dice' simply refers to chance instead of certainty.

For example, should you buy stocks this week or next week? you dont know what the stock market will do so its a roll of the dice.

'everything going pear-shaped' means everything going wrong.

I believe this expression comes from the effects of aging. My body was trim and muscular during my youth now it has gone decidedly pear shaped. I am not happy about this.

Everything has gone pear-shaped = things have taken a turn in the wrong direction.
