    If a word ends in consonant-vowel-consonant eg sit, you double the last consonant -> sitting

    If the word has more than one syllable eg prefer, begin etc, you double the last consonant only if the final syllable is stressed:
    preFER -> preferring/preferred

    You don't double it if the stress is not on the final syllable:
    Edit -> editing
