    meaning of the sentence

    He said that allowing a massive auto industry to collapse in the middle of what is already a severe downturn " could send our suffering economy into a deeper and longer recession.
    1. What does ' in the middle of what is already a severe downturn" mean..
    ( Please try to explain that sentence in a simple words)

    "In the middle of sth" means that sth is being experienced or in progress. For example, "I am in the middle of a conversation" means I am talking with somebody at the moment. "In the middle of what is already a severe downturn" therefore means a severe downturn is being experienced. "What is already a severe downturn"=the thing which is already a severe downturn.
