    Re: The "pollution" or "contamination" of the air?

    1. This course assumes/requires/demands no previous knowledge of the subject
    A. Assures; B. assigns; C.assumes; D.assembles
    I choose C for this sentence but really I don't understand its meaning.

    2. His parents’ hostile attitude drove him to leave home.
    A.Drove; B.made; C.urged; D. suggested;
    I choose A but my teacher chose C. YOU ARE CORRECT

    3. Which book would you advise me to read?
    A.Suggest; B.say; C.rather; D.advise;
    I choose A but my teacher chose D. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU SUGGEST THAT I READ.

    4. The contamination of the air by toxic gases is one of the major problems of this century.
    A.Pollution; B.damage; C.contamination; D.dust;
    I choose A but I don't know what is the difference between pollution and contamination

    Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into an environment that causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem i.e. physical systems or living organisms. Hence, in this statement, 'contaminaton' is the preferred word, since it is referring to the outcome: pollution has occurred, and the air is now contaminated by toxic gases.

    1) Correct. This course does not expect you to have previous knowledge of the subject.

    2) I would choose A as well. I think your teacher may be wrong in this case.

    3) You can't say "suggest me" or "suggest him", etc. You can say:

    "I suggest (that) you read this book", or "she suggested (that) I read this book". You can also say "she suggested reading this book".

    4) I'd say "contamination", but the difference between "contamination" and "pollution" is very subtle. I think we use "pollution" to talk about the environment in general, but if we talk about specific substances (water, air, soil) we say "contamination". I may be wrong.
