What does "get with the program" mean?

What does "get with the program" mean? I heard this originally means to work the 12 steps of A.A. program, but still I cannot quite grasp the meaning, especially in non-obvious context.

This is my first question(I just registered), and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: What does "get with the program" mean?

This has been discussed before (about 18 mths ago, I'd guess), but I can't find it. The phrase means 'keep up with current thinking/priorities/fashion/sensibilities'; it's often used to mean 'your thinking/attitude/behaviour is out of date'. But if someone can point you to the original discussion there's a lot more there.

Re: What does "get with the program" mean?

The AA Steps are often called "the Program"

You will hear people in AA say, "I am working the program." (trying to study and implement the Steps into daily life)

However, the generic use of telling someone to "get with the program" could simply mean to straighten up, get organized, or follow the rules.

It is also used in the military or police. "the program" is a plan of action.
