If he didn't take everything so seriously...

If he didn't take everything so seriously, he would be much easier to work with

    Can I change it as:

Unless he took everything so seriously, he would be much easier to work with?

I wouldn't eat that food unless I was really hungry

I wouldn't have phoned him unless you'd suggested it

Can you explain unless with past tense and past perfect?

Re: If he didn't take everything so seriously...

Can anyone explain me the usage of unless with past tense and past perfect? I am really confused.

    BBC says:

-We cannot use unless with would to talk about unreal future situations:

If he didn't take everything so seriously, he would be much easier to work with.

If he weren't so bad-tempered, I would help him to get the work done

-We cannot use unless with would have to talk about unreal situations in the past either:

If you hadn't driven so recklessly, you wouldn't have had this accident.

If you hadn't had that last glass of wine, this would never have happened.

And I found these on some other site:

    Type 2: (Unless + past)

    a. Unless he was very ill, he would be at work.

    b. I wouldn't eat that food unless I was really hungry.

    c. She would be here by now unless she was stuck in the traffic.

Type 3: (Unless + past perfect)

    a. The elephant wouldn't have seen the mouse unless she'd had perfect eyesight.

    b. I wouldn't have phoned him unless you'd suggested it.

    c. They would have shot her unless she'd given them the money.

I am not going to eat that food, but I might eat it if I was really hungry.

I didn't phone him, but I might have if you had suggested it.

    (I hope that helps.)

I can never remember which conditional is which.

(PM Tdol for more help. He can remember this stuff.)

Since he wasn't ill, why wasn't he at work?
