    big broad strokes

    Hi

Sometimes my favourite records are not the ones that are made with big broad strokes. I like people's more subtle, quirky stuff.

--- What does he mean by big broad strokes?

    BTW: quirky it's strange, right?

Yes, but strange in an amusing/attractive/interesting/fascinating way.

The 'strokes' in the phrase 'broad strokes' are (originally) to do with painting - in fact quite often 'broad-brush' is spelt out. A 'broad-brush approach' is a general overview, covering the area 'with a few strokes'.

So, he's saying that he likes general records, they don't have to be so ambitious.

He says he doesn't like the general ones (which are ambitious, in that they aim to sell to a wide market). He likes quirkier ones - say, a blind beggar playing an acoustic guitar, not in a recording studio.
