    "rip apart"

I searched for a definition but couldn't find one. What is the meaning of the phrasal verb "to rip apart?"

    Thank you.

It can have different meanings. The obvious one is that if you take a piece of fabric like cotton and tear it, you are ripping it apart.

The other meaning is for example in the case of a trial in court. The defendant is accused of murder, but claims that he was somewhere else at the time of the murder. His aliby would be "ripped apart" by the prosecuting attorney who could prove that the accused's aliby is not sound.

    I am not a teacher.

    Dear Stefan:

'To rip apart' can mean simply to rip (or tear) something into two or more pieces:

'She ripped apart the magazine before putting it in the recycling.'
'He ripped apart the old shirt to use it for cleaning rags.'

But it can also mean to criticize savagely:

'The critics ripped apart Keanu Reeves acting in 'The Matrix'.

'Her advisor mercilessly ripped apart the arguments put forth in her paper.'

People also say, 'ripped into,' to mean essentially the same thing (vehement criticism):

'My best friend ripped into me after I forgot to pick her up on my way to work.'

    I hope this is helpful,

    Petra
