'What was' or 'What did' etc

Can someone please explain to me when and why we use 'was' and 'did' for questions? When do we say 'what was' and 'what did'. I have been asked by students and cannot get a definitive answer from anyone.

"was" can be used for asking question when it refers to adjective in past tense.

"did" can also be used for asking question but when it refers to verb in past tense.
