By the time vs By that time

    Hello Teachers,

Could you please tell me What is difference between "By the time and By that time".Should I use "By the time" in future tense and "By that time" in past tense only?

I kindly request you to please help me with some example sentences.

By the time I get home, it will be very late.

By that time, we will have arrived there.

By that time, all the food had gone.

    Does this answer your question?

It's not related to tense. Use 'that' when your audience/readers already know which time you're talking about:

'By the time I get to Phoenix she'll be rising.'

    But

She always goes out to buy the papers at 8.00; so I didn't phone until 9.00. By that time she'd be sure to be back from the shops.
