Smile which is the predicate in this sentense

Critics are hoping the young director can breathe new life into the French film industry.

If I say the sentense i will say like that. Critics hope that the young director can breathe life into the French film industy. I do not understand why 'critics are hoping'

Re: which is the predicate in this sentense

    Dear Janezhao:

Both ways mean basically the same thing.

Critics are hoping is used in the sentence to give a sense of immediacy and action.
Critics hope has more the idea of a general, continuing sense.

For example, I might say, 'I hope you have good luck,' it could mean that, in general, I hope you have good luck in your life.

But if I say, "I am hoping you have good luck,' it probably refers to some specific event, such as a job interview or your performance on an upcoming test.

I am hoping this is helpful!

    Petra
