    this late = ?

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to help me to understand the expression in bold in the following sentence?

Even so, if we change classes this late, we might not get a passing grade.

I have found only this entry in my Dictionary: this late こんなに遅く (China hieroglyphs)

    late: Definition, Synonyms from Answers.com

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

    Re: this late = ?

"this late" suggests that it is already probably too late to start thinking about changing class. You are too far into the class to consider moving.

ie; A three month course starts at the end of September and ends at the end of December.
At the end of November you want to join the course.

But joining this late means you have little time to prepare for the final exam and have missed a lot of material.
