Jubilee 2000 had the coming millennium as a dramatic hook to hang the campaign on. We wanted to encourage a one-off opportunity to drop the debts of the poorest countries in the world to the richest.
--- I just don't get the meaning of these two sentences. I suppose the second one means that some people wanted to encourage the rich countries to cancel the debts of the poor countries and take them on themselves?
But what about the first sentence?
Loan forgiveness probably made economic sense, since countries couldn't afford to pay off their debts, anyway. So why not let the new year also be the time for change? It would be good marketing for a change that arguably needed to happen anyway.
As we say in the U.S. on New Year's Eve: Out with the old and in with the new....
Thank you Charlie!
