    Re: very earth

A Martian sees an astronaut throw litter in a canal and says, "That's very Earth!"

    Re: very earth

    Okay. Sorry. How's this:

He worships the very earth she walks on.

It's an idiom. "Very" isn't necessary.

The word 'very' in this expression is used as an intensifier. One often sees it in an expression such as,
'I had become so disoriented I did not recognize even the very earth I walked upon.'
    or in the cliché,
'S/he worships the very earth [or sometimes 'ground'] s/he walks on.'

As you can see, 'earth' means 'ground' in these sentences, but it can refer to the Earth as well.

'Very' is also used as an intensifier in expressions as:

'I stood in this very same spot a year ago to the day.'
'Thank you! You have given me the very gift I wanted!'
    where it means 'exact'.

If you look up 'very' at dictionary.com you will find many helpful examples of its various uses.

    I hope this is helpful,

    Petra
