    by the way

    Hi teachers!

Is it okay to understand that "by the way is used to change the subject"?
Or is it used only when you're going back to the original subject later?

Sorry if my question is too vague.

    Re: by the way

It is not so much that the person is changing the conversation per se, but has remembered something which they then interject into the conversation (before they forget); or say just as they are about to walk away after having a conversation, and remember something else unrelated to the conversation that they needed to mention/ask about etc.
