    correct use of "is" or "are"

    I am terrible at grammar and the correct use of English!
    Please inform me of which is correct in the following sentence: is or are.
    (and why). thanks!!!
    "One of our most compelling characteristics is/are the ability to take a leap of faith and never look back!"
