    after one year + tenses

    Hi,

    I am talking about an investment today and I was saying :

    "after one year if you were lucky your return would be 10%"

    is this sentence correct?

    I'd say :
    After a year, if you are lucky, you might get a 10% return.

    With a capital letter for 'after', the commas and full stop, the sentence is grammatically correct.

    Your returns could be 10% in the first year alone!

    Notice the 'could be', which is very different from 'will be'. I could have said 1000% and still be telling the truth. By adding 'alone' I suggest even greater returns in subsequent years, but I dont promise it. Add the exclamation mark to add emphasis and suggest that this is an amazing piece of information.

    In fact, this statement says nothing about returns, nor promises anything. But such is marketing.
