    meaning of next weekend

Today is Monday. Is the coming Saturday or Sunday referred to as this weekend or next weekend?

    Many thanks.

It depends on the context of the conversation. If we were talking on Monday and I said, 'I had a relaxing time this weekend' then I am obviously referring to the weekend just past. If I said, 'I am going away this weekend', I am equally obviously talking about the coming weekend. In this last situation 'this' or 'next' are both common.

    Re: meaning of next weekend

    I think it is ambiguous.

On Monday, I would assume 'next' weekend to mean the coming weekend and 'this' weekend to be the one just past.

On Friday, the coming weekend would be 'this' weekend, 'next' weekend would be the one after, and 'last' weekend the one just passed.

I guess its to do with the concept of distance. As we move closer to the new weekend it becomes 'this' one in the same way that wherever I happen to be is always 'here'.

Smile Re: meaning of next weekend

When you want to use this with weekend and other similar words, referring to the weekend that is ahead of you, just add coming:
[on a Monday] I'm going skiing to the Alps this coming weekend.

    No more ambiguity present!

    Re: meaning of next weekend

It never occurred to me that there could be so many different ways to express and understand that!
