    powerful

    Dear teachers,

It isn't always known how to make ____________ use of foreign faculty.
    a. powerful b. creative c. advanced
The key is 'a'. Could you please explain is there a collocation "powerful use' ? I can't find it in my dictionary. And could you please explain if "b' and 'c' are possible?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Jiang

    Re: powerful

Love to - if I knew what 'foreign faculty' meant.
And doubly bewildered when the expected answer is 'powerful foreign faculty'.

There are others in the forum with the powerful faculty for divining what might really be meant here.

    Re: powerful

If so, then so far we have:
We're not sure what to do with a powerful establishment set up to fulfill a particular function or provide a particular service, typically an industrial or medical one - and owned and run by foreigners/or one located overseas.

    Re: powerful

    Dear David,
'foreign faculty' refers to teachers who work at a university in another country. They work abroad as a teacher.
As far as I know we can say "to make good use of something". I don't know we can make use of somebody.

    Re: powerful

    So we have:

    a) It isn't always known how to make powerful use of a foreign faculty
    b) It isn't always known how to make creative use of a foreign faculty
    c) It isn't always known how to make advanced use of a foreign faculty

Of these I would say b) sounds the most natural. Of course this depends on what message the author was trying to convey. I still dont like 'powerful use' since this is too ambiguous and sounds odd to my ears.

    Re: powerful

    Ahh. light bulb icon.

Jiang: none of them is really very appropriate.
Instead of 'powerful', I think they mean 'dynamic'

If the foreign faculty is to work hand in hand with the local teachers, then 'creative' might suggest that, whereas the local teachers have set ways, the foreigners might bring in new ideas and ways.

'advanced' : I think the person who dreamt up this item might have had the idea of 'forward thinking'; but really, this possibility is

That is, none of them are good!
