    Smile meaning

Rita was privately educated at an exclusive girls' school.
She was hit by a city bus and is suing the city for $2 million.
What is the meaning of the underlined parts?

    Re: meaning

'exclusive' here means that the school carefully selects those girls that it will accept as students, based on social status (e.g. daughters of titled parents, prominent politicians and businessmen etc., and charge very high fees (which also acts to exclude most working class and middle class parents from even applying for their children to enroll, as they couldn't afford the fees!

The city (municipal) authority, the 'government' of the city, owns and runs the bus service.

If you slipped and fell inside a department store, you would not sue the cleaning staff, or the store manager, but the store as a Registered Company. Similar, if hit my a bus, you do not sue the driver himself, but the owner of the bus - in this case, the city.
