What to use at present perfect situation

Suppose you are going somewhere and you see your friend standing besides his car.(there is some problem in the car ).you ask him "why are you standing here".how he will reply.he will use present perfect tense.but how will he say.?suppose after going back to home his mom asks :-"What happened ? why are you late"?
he will reply definitely using past indefinite.(my car broke down).but what to say at present perfect situation.
