    Re: Neuter pronoun

Inanimate nouns, animals that are not pets and the gender is not important (a cow in a field, for example)

    And in American English, organizations.

An army marches on its stomach.
I joined the party to be part of it.
When the band plays live, it rocks.

The use of plural verbs with collective nouns is common in BrE, but the singular is also fine.

    Re: Neuter pronoun

I have known mothers get upset when I used 'it' in reference to their baby. They all look alike to me at that age.

I would agree with you about "baby" a baby is an infant child of either sex. The mother would be toooooooo sensitive.
