    contrary to means :conflicting with; counter to
    e.g. Contrary to all expectations, my teenage son actually enjoyed going to see the exhibition of the Impressionists.

    Your sentence has the meaning: Unlike the party last year, this one is great. (The speaker is at the party, which is still going on.)
    and
    Compared with the party they threw last time, this one is great.
