    above my chief joy

Could anybody suggest a translation of the following sentence:

"Let my right hand forget her cunning,
if l prefer not you above my chief joy!''

Actually the thing that confuses me is the part "above my chief joy"

The psalmist is stressing the importance of remembering Jerusalem. He says that if he were to forget Jerusalem, a suitable consequence would be the loss of his ability to play his lyre (let my right hand forget her cunning), which is his greatest (chief) joy. He makes a parallel reference to his ability to sing (let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth).

So: Let me lose my ability to play and sing if I do not prefer Jerusalem to music, my greatest (worldly) joy.

'Above my chief joy' = more than my greatest joy. 'Greatest joy' = the thing from which I derive the most joy in life'

    I hope this is helpful,

    Petra
