    describe, others, look after

    Dear teachers,
I have three questions to ask:

    No.1
Decide what your aim or objective is: then _____ it in a complete topic sentence.
    a. state b. describe
The key is 'a'. No problem. Could you please explain if 'b' is possible?

    No.2
The members of a society depend on ________.
    a. each other b. others
The key is 'a'. No problem. Could you please explain if 'b' is possible?

    No.3
They are crazy about animals. They catch them, train them and ________ them.
    a. raise b. look after

The key is 'a'. No problem. Could you please explain if 'b' is possible?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Re: describe, others, look after

    1. If you 'state' an aim or an objective, you express it clearly and precisely in words.
If you 'describe' something, you give an account of its characteristics and qualities.

To the question, "What is it?":
    - 'describing', I might say: "It has four legs and a tail. Eats meat, likes bones. Friendly disposition."
    - 'stating', I would say, "A dog."
I might describe an aim or an objective as 'a noble endeavour'; " an effort to clarify a long-standing contentious issue in science". This does not tell me what the aim is. I need to actually state what the specific aim is: "To disprove Einstein's Theory of Relativity."

    3. (b) could have been a possibiity. The issue in this test item is that only one can be chosen, and it has to be the most appropriate to the sentence given.
A person would catch an animal, feed and care for its needs (look after it), and gradually train the animal.
This is not the order in which things happen in the sentence:
They catch, they train - and since training takes time, they must be looking after it already, after they 'catch' the animal, otherwise the animal would be dead.
So - the sequence of events must be: (i) catch - (ii) train (and so be looking after them) - and (iii) if they are young, foster their growth over time ((=raise them).
