    shipped

    Hi

Our new album was released in November and shipped over 5 million copies worldwide, which was our biggest shipment ever. Within a month it was up to eight million, which made it our fastest-selling record.

Does it mean that they released 5 million records on the market and they never released so many of them before?

And the last sentence says that they had to release on the market even more copies, up to eight million, or maybe it means they sold 8 million copies?

    Re: shipped

Probably means that record stores ordered the album. The stores get the shipment of records. He could have said they "filled orders", or "distributed" over 5 million.

"largest shipment ever" means largest amount of record albums.

"up to eight million" means the orders then reached a total of 8 million albums, which was the largest amount they ever sold.

    Re: shipped

They pressed and shipped out 5 million albums in November, which made it the biggest initial release of an album by the company. They expected this album to be popular, and it was so popular, they had to press more albums and ship them out to the stores quickly, so that within a month, they had pressed and dispatched a total of 8 million.
Companies will ship albums and books to distributors, and the retail shops order them in. Obviously, if an album is popular, and a shop sells all it's copies, they order in more from the distributor. If an album is very popular, then the distributor runs out and has to order in more from the record company. Apparently, the demand on the distributor outstripped their supply very quickly, and they had to send in an order to the record company for more albums within a matter of weeks. The album was selling so fast, it became their fastest-selling album.
