Confusion when we should append "s" character

    Hello All,

I am always confused when we should append "s" character. Say for an example

"John plays tennis once a week."

I am confused whether we can also write :
"John play tennis once a week."

    Another example would be :
    "Mary eats fish on Fridays."

But in this example, there is no "s" in start : "
We start work at 9 a.m. every day."

    Any Help in this?

    Regards,
    Brett

Welcome! The following is the correct pattern.

    I play/eat/start...
    You play/eat/start...
    He/She/It/John/Mary/My sister/The dog plays/eats/starts...

    We play/eat/start...
    You play/eat/start...
    They play/eat/start...

You can see that the only time you add "s" is for third-person singular.
    John/Mary/My sister/The dog are equivalent to He/She/It.

Thank you very much for replying.

Can you please suggest me some website or any thing where I can clear my concepts on English Grammer or this "third singular" which you just mentioned..

    Regards,
    Brett

You can start by checking the Grammar Glossary in the upper left-hand corner of this page.
