    continuous and perfect tenses

    Could you explain me differences between using of Present Continuous and Present Perfect with "today", "this evening", "this year" or over period of time.

    And one more question if it is possible.
    What is the book like? I do not know. I have never read it.
    OR
    What is the book like? I do not know. I have not read it.
    Are "never" and "non" equivalent in the present situation?

    There is no difference in terms of tacking on those time tags. The difference is in the uses of the tense forms themselves.

    I am going to the theatre this evening.

    I have been to the theatre this evening, and...

    Both are fine and both express the same. To my ear 'never' sounds somewhat stronger though.
