    had to - Usage

    Respected,
I would like you to clarify me.
Where and how can we use "had to ".
For Ex., We had to kill our patients
    (or)
A R Rahman had to overcome many hurdles on his path.

    what does it mean?

what is the alternative rather than 'Had to'

I suppose this sentence structure is correct?
It would be better if you could give some some examples in this regard.
Please correct me If i am wrong, I appreciate your help.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Regards
    Madhu

'Had to' indicates a past obligation/necessity.
