    Smile What is 'general English'?

What is 'general English'? Does it mean 'spoken English'?
And explain in detail what informal English and formal English are.

-We use relative clauses with prepositions in general English in a number of different ways.-

    Thanks in advance.

I think the writer just meant "ordinary English."

Formal and informal can mean several things. Sometimes it's the difference between English that faithfully follows the rule books (that is, "standard English") and English that includes slang, colloquialisms, non-standard grammar, and incomplete sentences.

It can also mean the difference between English used for formal purposes - speeches by heads of state or wedding invitations, for example - and conversational English.

In ESL, it's used in contrast with English for Specific Purposes (ESP), Professional Purposes, etc; a group of medical students who need to pass a certain exam have different needs from the mainstream General English courses, where the language taught is not so focussed or constrained.
