Is it wrong to use 'yet' to start a sentence?

Yet the main preoccupation of the government and opposition parties appears to be what analysts are describing as an increasingly dysfunctional political system: The man who is in line to become prime minister is linked to the murder of a Mongolian woman(,) whose body was obliterated with military-grade explosives.

A friend of mine told me I should not start a sentence with 'yet', as in the above sentence. Is she correct?

    Thank you very much.

There "Yet" probably has the meaning of 'But'.

    Thanks, 2006.

Can I conclude that is okay to start a sentence with 'yet', just as it is fine to start one with 'but'?

    Many thanks.
