I just want to ask : There`s song by name `If I WERE boy`. My question is why it`s in a plural?

    Re: Need to ask

    Good question!

This is a small point of English. Were is correct for imaginary and for situations that are either impossible or highly unlikely

If I were you.... (I'll never be you.)
"If I were a rich man...." (Tevya would never be rich.)
"If I were king...." (François Villon did not expect to be a king.)
I wish it were Sunday. (It isn't.)
If I were to eat a peanut, I'd die. (So I'm very unlikely to eat a peanut.)

    Re: Need to ask

I agree with Charlie, and also think you can understand better if you read about the subjunctive mood in European languages, of which "were" is a sort of vestige, though it is sometimes called a conditional, I think incorrectly.
