    Synonyms

Hi there! What is the difference in the meaning and use of the following synonyms: annex, appendix, addendum and supplement? (concerning documents or contracts)

    Re: Synonyms

An appendix is a very separate part planned to come with the whole, like a giant footnote. An addendum is anything decided after the fact to go with the whole, something initially forgotten or not thought of in time; a supplement is entirely separate but may be included for interest. An annex I don't know how to explain as easily, but means a generally additional part.

    Question Re: Synonyms

    Thanks Finika,

    Hello everyone,

Could you please elaborate on the difference between APPENDIX and ANNEX?

Or, are both words 100% the same in meaning?

    Thanks

Appendix - a separate part of a book/thesis/etc which gives extra information, in this case, you are the author.
For example, you made some charts with lots of data, they shall be showed in the appendix, or appendices.

Annexe - very similar to Appendix, but in this case, you had somebody to do the work for you. For example, your thesis needs some advanced calculation, then you may ask a mathematician to it, all information given by him/her goes to the annexe.

    Re: Synonyms

In French we write annexe, and it exists in English, but I've only seen Annex in Am. English. The alternative is fairly rare.
