Why is 'an' used with 'three weeks'?

Itís been an amazing three weeks.

I guess that 'an' is used with 'three weeks' because 'three weeks' is viewed as a period.

    Am I correct?

    Thanks.

Yes. In this case, it's the same as saying "It's been an amazing holiday" or "It's been an amazing time."

Right. Like a big fish, a small red Toyota, a long wait, a decidedly weird feeling, an overweight wrestler....

The British even say "after that three weeks, you may choose to ...." So, if they do it, we can't really call it wrong, can we?
