    Arrow "For" or " to"

In the name of the Merciful Allah,
Hi, when I describe something I encountered for the first time, is it better to say It was a new thing for me orIt was a new thing to me ?
    Please, help.

Both are okay, though I prefer "to me", or, "it was totally new to me" without the word thing.

    Re: "For" or " to"

For me, I always hear " to me", rather than " for me", on T.V. Any way, thanks a lot guys.
