    none or neither

I think in the following sentence, both none and neither are possible grammatically and in terms of meaning, but my book says only neither is possible . Can you please explain why? Thanks in advance.

I asked Salley and Kim but neither ( none ??) of them wanted to go out.

    Normally it goes like this:

    neither: two items
    none: several
