Question What is correct there are or there is?

    Hello!
    My name is Keum.
I'v learned that 'there is' is followed by singular noun and 'there are' is followed by plural noun.

But I could not figure out which one is correct between next two sentences.
Could you tell me and explain why?
There is a pen and a bag on the desk.
There are a pen and a bag on the desk.

    Thank you for your helping.

Use the singular form when there is a list of items after the verb, and the first noun is singular:

There is/There's a pen and a bag on the desk.

There is/There's a pen and two sheets of paper on the desk.
