    Question All he could do...

    Hello!

Could you please tell me if the following are correct and what alteration should be made ro make them sound natural?
    1. I asked him who shot Abraham Lincoln and all I could get from him was that he did't do it.
    2. I asked him who shot Abraham Lincoln and his answer was that he didn't do it.
What's the English time expression for the underlined group of words in
As they were walking back home, at a certain time Mr White stopped.
(I mean that there came a moment in time when he stopped )

    Thanks a million!

    Re: All he could do...

I would use the past perfect as the sentence refers to 2 different times in the past (asking/shooting):
    1. I asked him who had shot Abraham Lincoln and all I could get from him was that he hadn't done it.
    2. I asked him who had shot Abraham Lincoln and his answer was that he hadn't done it.
