    Usage of "either"

In Enoch Arden by Alfred Tennyson, there's a paragraph that drove me crazy:

    ...Bright was that afternoon,
Sunny but chill; till drawn thro' either chasm,
Where either haven open'd on the deeps
    ,
    Roll'd a sea-haze and whelm'd the world in gray,
Cut off the length of highway on before,
And left but narrow breath to left and right
Of wither'd holt or tilth or pasturage.

Could anyone enlighten me as to the usage of "either" here and kindly explain to me what the italicized part is all about by paraphrazing it in modern English? Is it that the person in the poem is walking on a road sandwiched by chasm on one side and a haven on the other?I am so lost...

    Thanx!

    Re: Usage of "either"

It means this one or that one; you need to see the whole poem to refer back to the dichotomy.

There's apparently no context in the poem relating to this topography. Thank you for the help though
