    Billy is turning five

Recently I had to write down what age my child is turning. English is my second language and I think my accent is making things more difficult. I want to write
    "Billy is turning five."
When I say it though I hear , Billy's turning five. Is this a correct abbreviation for 'is'?
    Please help.

    Thank you
