    predicate nominative

    is predicate and subject complement the same?

    how about the noun complement?

    Hello J.,

    The predicate is that part of the sentence which is not the subject:

    1. The cat with two heads is blue.

    Thus above, the emboldened part is the subject, and the underlined part is the predicate.

    The predicate here can be divided into copula + subject complement. The copula is "is"; the subject complement is "blue".

    Hello J.,

    I would say that a "predicate nominative" is one kind of subject complement. Cf.

    1. The cat is white.
    2. The cat is a nuisance.

    A "predicate nominative" must be a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun. Therefore only in #2 above is the subject complement a pred. nom.
