Question Can someone please help me identify the error here?

Can someone please help me with this exercise? It asks that I identify the errors in the following:

    5) She said she was busy now but I’m surprised she didn’t come later.

    My answer is as follows:

Using “now” in this context doesn’t work because “was busy” refers to the past, whereas “now” refers to the present. It would be possible if this was an example of reporting direct speech.

Is it correct? I would greatly appreciate help. Thanks.

Sorry, but that's not it. "Now" is usually used in the present only, but can be used in the past: "Now Caesar returned to Rome" = "Then Caesar returned to Rome".

In your example, the error lies in the switching from past to present and then back to the past tense. The middle clause should read "but I was surprised"....
