    "Next"

Let's say today is Monday and I heard something about "Next Wednesday".
My question is: what exactly does "Next Wednesday" mean? Is this the Wednesday of this current week or the Wednesday of the next week?

    Thanks a lot.

    Re: "Next"

A native speaker would probably ask the person to clarify also!
We would expect the person to say, 'on Wednesday', because it is so close to today, Monday.

To my way of thinking, your speaker meant the next-week Wednesday; normally you'd say on Wednesday (as David says), or this (coming) Wednesday.

    Thanks David.
I would probably ask the person to clarify this confusion. I thought there was a rule to uniquely find out what the person meant. But It seems that it is not the case.

Rule? This is English we're talking about! To be clear in the first place, the speaker might have said 'Wednesday of next week' - to mean the one that (writing as I am on a Monday) is ten days hence. But if the speaker had said 'next Wednesday' - or the (almost) equally common, in Br Eng at least - 'Wednesday next', you'd have to ask for clarification.
