    Re: What is a phrase?

a word or group of words which can fulfil a syntactic function in a clause. A phrase is named after the most important word in it (the head), so we have noun phrases, verb phrases, adjective phrases, and adverb phrases. Besides, there are prepositional phrases, which are introduced by a preposition (though the preposition is not called a head).
