    What does thiswhenmean?

    Cambridge Learner's Dictionary:

work (n) 1. EFFORT [u] when you use physical or mental effort to do something

Dictionaries often explain a noun using a 'when' clause. What does that mean? Does it mean this word can be used as a time noun (as in 'during the work'), or anything else?

(Macmillan explains this 'work' as 'activity that involves physical or mental effort'.)

    Thank you in advance.
