to their own ends = to their own interest/purpose

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following excerpt from an English text?

In contrast, the spiritual God declared that the Israelites were corrupting themselves by worshiping the Golden Calf, and He showed His displeasure by destroying them. People corrupt themselves by defining God's nature to their own ends.

to their own ends = to their own interest/purpose

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

They take liberties with God to suit their needs.
