    "other" is plural.
    I need other books.

    I need another book.
    I need the other book.

    Let say:
You have book a, book b, book c, but I want another book, not those you've mentioned.
You have book a, book b, and the other book is c, but You don't have any other book instead of book a, book b, and c.
I hope you understand my examples.

As a rule of thumb, your description is fine. The other can also be used with plurals too, though. The same applies to another.

The other books (= those remaining in the group of books) belong to John.
We still need another (= extra) 10 people for the job.

Yes, of course you are right. Thanks for adding that.
