    How do you use subsist in this sentence?

    <Plants cannot subsist on no water.>

    'Subsist' means survive. Your sentenced would be better cast as 'Plants cannot subsist without water.' The preposition is not required unless you have an object: 'I subsist on cheap sake and rice balls'.
