    subjunctive

    Hi, teachers.
I got a sentence from COCA:
In the event that it were to happen, how many Cuban-Americans do you have in the state of Florida?
Is it good English? Is it acceptale?
In my opinion, it should go like this:
In the event that it were to happen, how many Cuban-Americans would you have in the state of Florida?
    Am I right?
    If you could help me!
    Thank you very much.

    Re: subjunctive

It depends on whether "it" happening would affect the number of Cubans in Florida.

It could be that "it" would change the number, in which case "would you have" is the better choice.

It could be that "it" won't change the number, but many/most/all of them would be affected by it in some way. In that case "how many do you have [who might/could/would be affected]" is the better choice.
